History of Naula Divisional Secretariat
Considering the historical background of Naula, it dates back to prehistoric times. Legends say that the Naula division was the abode of the Naga people. There are many folktales about the Naula name formation, the most famous being the Naula, which is the habitat of the Naga tribes, It is called the Naula because it has a spring that flows in the shape of a cobra,The most popular of these are the notion that the Na tree had its roots in the existence of a group of trees.
“Nalanda Gedige” is one of the most important elements of the Pallava tradition of Sri Lankan architecture, From the 7th century to 9th century, is also located in this Divisional Secretariat Division. The historic Kothmale - Thamankaduwa road runs through the Ambana Gam Piyasa of Naula Divisional Secretariat.Historical “Ambana” is called "Ambawanani". The river that flows through this mango forest is said to have been the Ambana river.
Legend has it that the Rajaguru lineage on the Nalanda Deiyankaduwa road in this area treated King Dutugemunu when he was bitten by a cobra. The war against King Gajaba, the then ruler of Polonnaruwa, was one of the most fierce battles in Sri Lankan history. The main battle center and base of Prince Parakramababahu in that war was Nalandaawa,Ambana, Alagamuwa and Talagoda camps. After this battle, King Parakramabahu I united Sri Lanka and the people of Naula played an immense role in the victory.It is said that these leaders used the Naula as a safe haven during the Matale Rebellion of 1848. According to the above facs, Naula Divisional Secretariat has been identified as an area with historical background.
